How to Keep Bananas Fresh Longer
Opening
Bananas are delicious, affordable, and easy to add to breakfast, smoothies, and snacks. But they can quickly become overripe, especially in warm weather.
The good news? A few simple storage tricks can help your bananas stay fresh longer and reduce food waste.
1. Keep Bananas Away From Other Fruit
Bananas release ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening. Keep them away from fruits such as apples, avocados, and tomatoes if you want them to ripen more slowly.
Handy Hint: A fruit bowl may look attractive, but bananas often last longer when stored separately.
2. Wrap the Stems
Once you bring your bananas home, separate them or keep them together and wrap the stem ends with a small piece of plastic wrap.
This can help slow the release of ethylene gas and may give you a little extra time before the bananas become overripe.
3. Hang Your Bananas
If you have a banana hanger, use it.
Hanging bananas keeps them from resting against a countertop or other surfaces, which can reduce bruising.
No banana hanger? Place them in a spot where they won't be knocked or squeezed.
4. Don't Refrigerate Green Bananas
Keep unripe bananas at room temperature until they reach the ripeness you prefer.
Once they're ripe, refrigeration can help slow further ripening. The peel may turn brown or dark, but the fruit inside can remain good.
5. Freeze Overripe Bananas
Have bananas that are already very ripe?
Don't throw them away.
Peel them, cut them into pieces, place them in a sealed freezer bag or container, and freeze them.
They're perfect for:
Smoothies
Banana pancakes
Oatmeal
Banana bread
Healthy desserts
Quick Handy Hint
Bananas ripen faster when warm and exposed to ethylene-producing fruit. Keep them separate, avoid bruising, and freeze ripe bananas before they go to waste.
Faith & Everyday Living
Being a good steward isn't only about money. It can also mean making wise use of the food and resources God has provided.
