How to Pray When You Don't Know What to Say: Finding Words in God's Presence

Introduction

When I Didn't Know What to Say to God
There have been times in my own life when I came before God and simply did not know what to say.

Sometimes I could pray specific prayers. Other times, all I could do was cry.
I remember asking God questions like, “Lord, why?” and “What are You doing?” I did not always have a long prayer prepared. Sometimes I could only sit with the feelings in my heart and know that God already understood what I could not explain.
That has taught me something important about prayer: I do not have to have everything figured out before I come to God.
There have been beautiful dreams about my future that have given me hope, and there have also been circumstances that did not look anything like what I hoped for. I have had to learn to bring both my hope and my questions to God.
I also have to be careful with dreams, expectations, and words people have spoken about my future. I cannot treat every dream or prophetic statement as a guaranteed promise. I have to test what I believe through Scripture, prayer, wisdom, and discernment.
Sometimes my prayer has simply been, “Lord, help me understand.”
Other times it has been, “Lord, give me strength.”
And sometimes it has been, “Lord, I don't know what to say, but You know my heart.”
I have learned that prayer is not about finding impressive words. It is about coming honestly before God.
I can bring Him my questions without pretending I have no questions. I can bring Him my tears without being ashamed of them. I can ask Him for direction while admitting that I do not know what the future holds.
And when words fail me, I can still come.
God already knows what is in my heart.
Use Scripture as Your Prayer
When words are difficult, let God's Word become your prayer.
Read a Psalm slowly and personalize it.

Psalm 23 says,
"The Lord is my shepherd..."
You might pray:
"Lord, thank You for being my Shepherd today. Help me trust Your guidance and rest in Your care."

Don't Let Guilt Keep You Away
