Devotional: When You Feel Like Giving Up: Finding Strength to Keep Going with God
When You Feel Like Giving Up: Finding Strength to Keep Going with God
Key Scripture: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." — Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
Introduction
Everyone experiences moments when they feel like giving up.
Sometimes it's because prayers seem unanswered. Other times it's the weight of repeated disappointments, financial struggles, family problems, health challenges, or simply the exhaustion of carrying burdens day after day.
You may wonder:
"Is it worth continuing?"
"Will things ever change?"
"Has God forgotten me?"
If these questions sound familiar, you are not alone.
Many of God's greatest servants reached moments when they felt overwhelmed. Yet each discovered that God's strength was greater than their weakness.
The good news is that God specializes in giving hope to weary hearts. He sees every tear, hears every prayer, and promises never to abandon His children.
If you feel like giving up today, this devotional is a reminder that God is not finished with your story.
Even Faithful Believers Become Discouraged
The Bible doesn't hide the struggles of God's people.
Instead, it honestly records their fears, doubts, and moments of discouragement.
This should encourage us because it reminds us that struggling does not mean our faith has failed.
It simply means we are human.
God's grace meets us in our weakness.
Elijah Wanted to Quit
After witnessing God's miraculous victory over the prophets of Baal, Elijah expected Israel to return wholeheartedly to the Lord.
Instead, Queen Jezebel threatened to kill him.
Elijah fled into the wilderness, exhausted and afraid.
He prayed:
"I have had enough, Lord... Take my life." — 1 Kings 19:4
Yet God did not rebuke Elijah.
Instead, He cared for him.
God provided food.
God gave him rest.
God spoke gently to him.
God reminded Elijah that he was not alone.
Sometimes our greatest need is not more effort but renewed strength from God.
David Encouraged Himself in the Lord
David experienced countless disappointments.
He was hunted by King Saul.
He lived in caves.
He endured betrayal by friends and even family.
One of his darkest moments came when the Amalekites attacked Ziklag and carried away the families of David and his men.
The Bible says:
"But David found strength in the Lord his God." — 1 Samuel 30:6
Notice where David turned.
Not to circumstances.
Not to people.
Not to his own abilities.
He found strength in God.
When life feels overwhelming, that is where we must turn as well.
Jesus Understands Weariness
One of Christianity's greatest comforts is knowing that Jesus understands human suffering.
He experienced:
Rejection.
Betrayal.
Loneliness.
Physical pain.
Grief.
Exhaustion.
Before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane with such deep anguish that His sweat was like drops of blood.
Because Jesus suffered, He understands our struggles completely.
Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that He sympathizes with our weaknesses.
You never suffer alone.
God's Strength Is Available to the Weary
Isaiah 40:29 says:
"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak."
Notice that God doesn't promise His strength only to the strong.
He promises it to the weary.
When we reach the end of our own strength, we discover His.
God never asks us to carry life's burdens alone.
Why We Should Never Give Up
God Is Still Working
Even when you cannot see progress, God is working behind the scenes.
Joseph waited years in prison.
David waited years before becoming king.
Abraham waited decades for God's promise.
What looked like delay was actually preparation.
Your waiting season is not wasted.
God Finishes What He Starts
Philippians 1:6 gives believers tremendous hope:
"He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
God never abandons His work.
If He has begun shaping your life, He will faithfully continue.
Your Story Isn't Over
Today's struggle is only one chapter.
It is not the entire story.
Many of the greatest testimonies begin with seasons that looked hopeless.
Keep trusting the Author of your life.
He is still writing your story.
Practical Ways to Keep Going
1. Pray Honestly
Tell God exactly how you feel.
David did this throughout the Psalms.
God welcomes honest hearts.
He already knows your struggles.
2. Read Scripture Daily
When discouragement grows, fill your mind with God's promises.
His Word renews hope and strengthens faith.
Even one chapter each day can encourage your heart.
3. Remember God's Past Faithfulness
Take time to recall previous prayers God has answered.
Remember the challenges He has already brought you through.
The same God who helped you then remains faithful today.
4. Don't Isolate Yourself
God often encourages us through other believers.
Stay connected to your church.
Accept prayer from trusted Christian friends.
Allow others to walk beside you.
5. Focus on One Day at a Time
Jesus said:
"Do not worry about tomorrow..."
Don't carry tomorrow's burdens today.
Ask God for today's strength.
Tomorrow's grace will come tomorrow.
God Uses Difficult Seasons
Sometimes the very season that makes us want to quit becomes the season that transforms our faith.
Hardship often teaches:
Patience.
Humility.
Dependence on God.
Compassion for others.
Spiritual maturity.
Although we would never choose these lessons, they often become some of the greatest blessings in our walk with Christ.
The Cross Looked Like Defeat
On Good Friday, it appeared that evil had won.
Jesus was crucified.
His disciples scattered.
Hope seemed lost.
But Sunday morning changed everything.
The resurrection reminds us that God can bring victory from what appears to be complete defeat.
If He could transform the cross into salvation for the world, He can also redeem the painful seasons of your life.
Never judge God's final plan by your current circumstances.
God's Promises for the Weary
When discouragement comes, remember these promises:
God will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
His grace is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9).
His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23).
He works all things together for good (Romans 8:28).
He gives strength to the weary (Isaiah 40:29).
These promises remain true whether you feel strong or weak.
Reflection Questions
What situation is making me feel like giving up?
Have I been relying on my own strength instead of God's?
How has God helped me through difficult seasons in the past?
What small step of faith can I take today instead of giving up?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
There are times when I feel tired, discouraged, and ready to give up. Thank You for reminding me that my strength does not come from myself but from You.
When my heart grows weary, fill me with renewed hope. Help me trust that You are still working, even when I cannot see the outcome. Give me the courage to keep praying, keep believing, and keep following You one day at a time.
Thank You for Your unfailing love, Your endless grace, and Your promise never to leave me. Strengthen my faith and help me remember that my story is not finished because You are still writing it.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Final Encouragement
If you are standing at the edge of discouragement today, don't give up. The God who sustained Elijah in the wilderness, strengthened David in his darkest moments, and raised Jesus from the dead is the same God who walks with you today. Your present struggle is not the end of your journey. God is using this season to build your faith, shape your character, and prepare you for what lies ahead. Keep trusting Him, even when progress seems slow. Keep praying, even when answers are delayed. Keep believing, even when hope feels small. One day you will look back and see that the moment you wanted to quit became the moment God began one of the greatest chapters of your life.
